It’s a whole rabbithole. “capitalism is exhausting, so we need cheap and easy, cuz we’re TIRED. ooh look, they’ve supplied a cheap and easy answer…and now they own you.” It’s such large-scale manipulation that most people don’t even think of it. Walmart and other big-box retailers have done it in other ways, they edge out local businesses, so to get things at all you have to drive further, which costs time and gas, so you buy from Walmart…even worse if you work there, you’re always broke so you’re just so grateful for the discount…
…and then they paint it as a good thing, when really this is why we can’t have nice things….
In related news, you can use this method to download your kindle books to your kindle device or PC.
To do a lot at one time:
- Amazon website
- Content & Devices under the Account & Lists menu
- Books
- Select All
- click on Deliver and
- select your Kindle and they will be sent
- then turn on wifi and connect
- sync (menu option or icon)
- and the books will download
the above will do 25 at a time; to do more than 25 at a time, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the next page then repeat Step 4 and the total at the top will now say 50. Continue on doing this and then do steps 5-9. If you’re downloading to an actual Kindle, I’d suggest plugging your Kindle into a charger and leaving it that way for a day or two because all those books will need to index.
Once you’ve downloaded them all:
For a Kindle device, you can take it off wireless. Airplane mode, they can’t touch anything. But you cannot add anything anymore, either. If you’re divorcing Amazon entirely, this won’t hurt…much.
For a laptop/PC, you can find a copy of your books and move them. This does NOT change the format, you will still need a Kindle-brand app or device to open them. Changing their format, that’s a whole ‘nother more technical process, I’m not prepared for the responsibility of coaching you through it, but it’s here if you’re ready to take it on.
